Winemakers Launch Programme to Protect Reputation of Marlborough Wine
By Oliver Lewis
A group of winemakers have banded together to protect the reputation of Marlborough wine, to make sure what is on the label reflects what is in the bottle.
Provisionally dubbed ‘Pure Marlborough Wine’, the membership programme aims to set standards to ensure the quality and reputation of wine from the region.
Dog Point Vineyard co-owner Ivan Sutherland, one of several winemakers on a steering group for the project, said it would act like a guarantee for consumers.
“We believe, with the amount of bulk wine going out of the district, there’s a degree of risk that it could undermine the integrity and value of the Marlborough name,” he said.
